Improvements to Birchbox But Is It Enough?

a box with a book and a note

Birchbox has begun to pall on me lately. I’m finding I get fewer and fewer beauty items that interest me and it’s probably not worth the $10. That’s after April was essentially free with a rebate from Woman’s Day and May came with a bonus box full of full size “Nuance” products by  Selma Hayek (which I actually liked).

You may have even noticed I’ve not posted a Birchbox review in awhile. So I was at the point of cancelling when I got the email telling me about improvements and additions to my Birchbox profile.

They now offer the option to control the number of perfumes you receive, which is a big plus to me since I never use it. They also let you opt in/out of the kinds of extras you want to receive. One of my big complaints was the food — believe it or not, I’m not a big chocolate/candy person and those samples were wasted on me.

And if you did want more food or more household goods, this is a huge bonus!

So I updated my profile and decided to stick it out for another month or two. My June box arrived shortly after, so I’m guessing there wasn’t time for my profile to take effect, but fortunately there was no fragrance.

I noticed they also added a pattern to the inside of the box, which is a tiny thing and yet something I loved about Glossybox. It’s the little details…

The theme this month was travel, “while you’re waiting for your vacation” — one of the best executions I’ve seen for either Glossybox or Birchbox, but I’m on the fence about the actual products I’ve received.

My favorites were the Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk and Suki Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser.

I was not a fan of the Mirenesse Glossy Kiss lip pencil in a scarlet color. I’d received one a few months back in my Glossybox in a far more suitable pale pink color. And this was the third or fourth time I’d seen a repeat product between the two companies.

The last two items were ok. I liked the 100% pure Vanilla Bean and Coconut body creams but the neon canteloupe Color Club nail laquer is a little too loud even for my flamboyant toes…

The little postcards they tossed in were pretty cute though.

So I’m undecided. I think I’ll stick it out a few more months and see if things get better with the lack of fragrance and snacks.
