$100 in Visa Gift Cards for $95, Plus $.40 Off Per Gallon of Gas
Safeway/Vons is running another deal on gift cards through their Just for U program. Not as good at first glance as the recent $91 for $100 Mastercard gift card deal, but still worth looking into.
In the coupon center there’s an offer for $15 off the purchase of two $50 Visa Gift Cards. The gift cards each have a $4.95 activation fee, which brings the net savings to $5.10.
But the deal is even better than it initially looks. Right now Safeway/Vons is offering 4x Gas Rewards on gift card purchases. Which means purchasing $100 in Visa gift cards immediately nets you 400 rewards points, or $.40 off a gallon on your next gas purchase. If you buy 15 gallons, that saves you $6, so you’ve already netted $11.10 on the deal. UPDATE 3/24/13 : People are reporting the 4x gas points are not being earned on AMEX, Visa, or Mastercard gift card purchases 🙁
PLUS if you use a credit card that offers a bonus for grocery store spend, you’re going to save/earn even more.
Off the top of my head:
- The American Express Blue Cash Preferred offers 6% back, which would be another $5.69 back.
- The American Express Premier Rewards Gold card offers 2x bonus points, which nets you 190 points for the purchase.
How to take advantage of this deal?
1. Sign in to your Just for U account or create a new account.  You need to already be registered for their club card in order to sign up, so if you don’t have one, go to your local Safeway (they don’t have an online means) and sign up for a club card and Just for U at the same time.
2. Go to the Coupon Center and scroll down til you see the $15 off $100 Mastercard Gift Card offer. (If you sort by About to Expire you’ll see if come up under 1/5/13)
3. Click Add.
It should work instantaneously so you add this to your card as you’re standing in the check out line.

I’ve earned bonus points by buying gift cards at Safeway before, but I just bought the two $50 Visa cards and it appears that not only are quadruple points not earned on Visa cards (probably Mastercards and AMEXs, too), but not even the base points are earned. Oh well….
That’s terrible 🙁 The local Safeway will only accept cash, haven’t had a chance to try other locations to see if they’ll take my premier card.
