Foursquare isn’t completely pointless

I’ll admit, I never really got Foursquare and the craze to broadcast your every location to friends. But I couldn’t sign up fast enough when I heard about TopGuest and American Express’s offers.
TopGuest awards 50 points for every check in at participating airports and hotels. Check in to your local hotel or airport every day and in a year and you’ll earn over 18,000 Hilton, Priority Club, United, etc points.
Update: United is no longer participating, but it looks like Virgin America is for the forseeable future.
Tip: Avoid getting too greedy and trying to check in multiple hotels from both your current and home locations. I did on a recent trip and immediately received an email letting me know I was in violation of their terms of agreement.
American Express’s Sync. Explore. Save.allows you to link a credit card to your Foursquare account. Search for specials via Foursquare, like $10 off $20 in dining spend, check in and use your linked card to pay and you’ll automatically get a statement credit.

The best smart phone app I’ve downloaded in awhile!
